Curtain falls on Formula 2 season for King in Abu Dhabi

Jordan King’s 2019 campaign in the FIA Formula 2 Championship drew to a close this weekend with the season finale at Yas Marina Circuit, Abu Dhabi. The Brit battled hard across the weekend only for the points to evade him in both races meaning the 25-year-old finishes the campaign 9th in the Drivers’ Championship.
The weekend’s opening practice session was to prove to be a sign of things to come for the British driver after closing out Friday’s opening session in P12. Across an interrupted qualifying session, King looked set to be fighting it out for a strong qualifying result until an untimely yellow flag meant that the British driver would have to settle for a P13 starting position in Saturday’s final feature race of the season. This was later promoted to P12 after post-qualifying penalties.
Getting a good start off the line, King and his MP Motorsport team were looking to trouble the top-ten in Saturday’s race. However tyre life and track conditions restricted much of the opportunity to climb his way through the pack and King ultimately had to settle for a P12 finish.
With similar ambitions for Sunday’s sprint race, the British driver and his Dutch teammates enjoyed more success making some progress through the order. Having made his way inside the top-ten, King had to work hard to manage what life was left in his tyres to successfully bring the car home in P9 and claim his fifteenth top-ten finish of the season.
“It has been a fantastic year with MP Motorsport and I really can’t thank everyone enough for their work over this year and those previous. We didn’t quite have the results we wanted for the last few rounds but we proved we could fight it out at the front and achieved some great results over the course of the season.”
This weekend’s results mean that King closes the season with a P9 finish in the Drivers’ Championship, amassing 79 points along the way. The focus now for King switches back to his LMP1 duties as he reunites with his Ginetta teammates ahead of the 8 Hours of Bahrain in two weeks time.
